Allianz Insurance has been named General Insurer of the Year at the prestigious British Insurance Awards.

At a ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall, chief executive, Andrew Torrance collected the accolade which was awarded by a 22-strong panel of practitioners, analysts, consultants, industry commentators, political representatives and market experts.

Following the ceremony, Andrew Torrance said: "I am extremely proud to be leading a company that has been recognised in this way. This award is a testament to the quality of our people and I would like to thank every one of our employees for all the hard work that has gone into making this success possible.

"This award recognises the highly successful year we had in 2009 and the continuing strength and stability of our business. At Allianz, we are now looking forward to the challenge of building on this success by continuing our focus on developing an organisation with outstanding capabilities, which delivers great service to its policyholders and broker partners."
