Motor Insurance Database

The 4th EU motor directive is targeted at improving the ease of handling cross border claims within Europe.  This required each country to maintain a register of all vehicles insured and the identity of the relevant insurer.

In the UK the government established the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and the Motor Insurers Information Centre (MIIC) to run and monitor progress.  The Motor Vehicles (Compulsory Insurance) (Information Centre and Compensatory) Regulations 2003 make it a legal requirement for fleet and motor trade policyholders to supply accurate and timely updates to the MID or face fines of up to £5,000.

The regulations require details to be supplied immediately of all road registered vehicles held for 14 days or more.

Records of all road registered vehicles held for less than 14 days and not submitted to the MID must be retained for 7 years.

Allianz provide a variety of means for this data to be supplied including the use of an established website www.allianz.co.uk/commercial/mid

The Fourth Motor Insurance Directive is designed to improve the claims process for EU citizens who are involved in motor accidents in other EU member countries. The principle requirement is that a claimant should be able to identify the relevant insurer from the Vehicle Registration Mark. This may also help to combat uninsured driving.

In the UK this legislation requirement is met by the MID which has been designed to provide a record of all insured motor vehicles registered for use on the road. To comply with legislation we require any additions or vehicle alterations to be notified immediately. This can be done by downloading and completing our Supply of Vehicle Data form.

In order to improve the Motor Insurance Database (MID) vehicle compliance, the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) launched the first phase of a major new publicity campaign on 18th April 2007 to raise awareness of the issues that commercial drivers will face if they are stopped by the Police because their vehicle details are not on the MID.

It is a remarkable fact that although the UK has only 1 per cent of the world’s population, it possesses 20 per cent of its CCTV cameras. That’s one camera for every 14 people, and if you spend your day in a town or city you could be spotted on camera as many as 300 times a day.

Tracey Wheeler, Allianz MID controller, and Neil Drane, head of MIIC operations consider the impact on the motor trade sector:
